More about Wasilla
About this data
The full database of currently active Alaska business licenses — every entity licensed to do business in the state, with name, NAICS line(s) of business, address, and issue/expiration dates. The count of active licenses is a broad proxy for business formation and small-business health, and the NAICS breakdown shows which sectors are growing. Headline series: total active licenses statewide, plus counts by 2-digit NAICS sector, derived from our monthly snapshots.
Known issues & gotchas
- This is a stock, not a flow. The file is only ever "licenses active right now" — no history. Trend comes entirely from our own snapshot cadence, so history starts when we start (2026-08) and a missed month is a hole that can never be backfilled. Keep every raw snapshot.
- The origin site is bot-blocked.
commerce.alaska.gov(the CBPL search/download pages) sits behind DataDome — plain HTTP clients get 403/CAPTCHA. The geoportal mirror ongis.data.alaska.govis the automatable path; do not point the connector at commerce.alaska.gov. - Mirror refresh cadence is unconfirmed. We don't yet know how often the geoportal copy syncs from CBPL (daily? weekly? ad hoc?). At build time, find the item's last-updated metadata (ArcGIS Hub exposes it) and record the snapshot's as-of date alongside our fetch date; alert if the mirror goes stale.
- The frontmatter URL is the Hub dataset *page*; the actual CSV lives behind an ArcGIS Hub download endpoint (resolvable from the item's API metadata). Resolve and pin the direct download URL at build time and record it here.
- Licenses ≠ businesses. One business can hold multiple license lines; many license holders are inactive, out-of-
