Monthly control-tower operation counts for Anchorage International (ANC)
and Fairbanks International (FAI) from the FAA's Air Traffic Activity
System — the activity pulse of Alaska's two hub airports, monthly since
October 1989. ANC's counts are dominated by air carrier and air taxi
(the cargo-hub story); FAI's by local general aviation (flight training).
Known issues & gotchas
www.is mandatory — bareaspm.faa.govreturns an Akamai 503
(stale origin mapping, not bot-blocking).
- **The
lineSQL must carry the server's full aggregate column list
verbatim** — a trimmed SELECT returns HTTP 500 every time. The constant
in the connector is load-bearing; do not "simplify" it.
- The raw POST bypasses the public 20th-of-next-month limiter and
leaks a partial current month (~days of data). The connector DROPS the
current calendar month entirely and marks the newest kept month
is_prelim until the 20th of the following month.
- The report is HTML with a
Total:footer row and comma-formatted
numbers; guest access has no CSV export.
- ATADS counts TOWER operations, not flights or passengers; Lake Hood
(LHD) is not in ATADS. Merrill Field (MRI, ~17k ops/mo — bigger than
Juneau) is a candidate Alaska GA indicator for later.
- Strong reliable seasonality (~2× summer/winter ANC, ~3× FAI) — yoy
comparisons only, per house rule.
