A curated handful of American Community Survey socioeconomic indicators for Alaska: median household income, poverty rate, median gross rent, and median home value. 1-year estimates for the statewide and Anchorage headline numbers; 5-year estimates to fill in every borough/census area (most are far below the 65k-population threshold for 1-year data). This is where "how much does an Alaska household earn" and "what share of Alaskans are poor" come from.
Known issues & gotchas
- An API key is now mandatory — verified 2026-08-06: keyless requests return "A valid key must be included with each data API request" (the old ~500-calls/day keyless allowance is gone). Key lives in env var
CENSUS_API_KEY; free from api.census.gov/data/key_signup.html. - JSON is row-oriented arrays with a header row (not objects), and every value is a string — cast numerics.
- Sentinel values, not nulls:
-666666666(and the-222222222/-888888888family) mean suppressed/unavailable — filter before casting or bounds checks will fire. - There is no 2020 1-year ACS (COVID response collapse; only experimental estimates) — a permanent gap year in every 1-yr series. Don't let the freshness monitor or interpolation paper over it.
- Endpoint year is part of the URL path (
/data/2024/acs/acs1) — connector must construct URLs per vintage and probe for the new year each September/December. - Variable IDs can shift between subject-table vintages (S-tables more than B-tables); re-verify
