About this data
Daily spot prices for Alaska North Slope crude (West Coast delivered) alongside WTI, Brent, and Henry Hub — the price side of Alaska's oil-revenue equation. ANS WC is *the* price that drives state petroleum revenue (production taxes and royalties are computed from it), so it's the natural pairing with TAPS throughput for a "volume × price" narrative. History back to June 1996 from the Dept. of Revenue's Tax Division. Headline series: ANS West Coast $/bbl.
Known issues & gotchas
- ASP.NET WebForms postback scrape. The date-range query requires a POST carrying
__VIEWSTATEand__EVENTVALIDATIONtokens harvested from a prior GET of the form page. Straightforward two-step scrape, but brittle if the page's control names change — snapshot raw HTML responses. Verified field names (2026-08-27):ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$txtstart/txtend(M/D/YYYY) /btnload; the data table isid="ContentPlaceHolder1_Table1", columns Date | ANS West Coast | West Texas Intermediate | Henry Hub | Brent | ANS Production. - History actually starts 2000-09-01, not 1996 — a full-range query from 6/1/1996 returns its first row at 9/1/2000. The landing page's "history to 1996" claim doesn't survive contact with the data.
- The table carries daily ANS production too (barrels/day, from tax records) — present for *every* calendar day, while prices print on trading days only (blank
<td>cells on weekends/holidays; parse blanks as gaps, never zeros). This one table therefore also covers the "AK DOR ANS production" dataset — no separateansold.aspxscrape needed for the daily series. - Full backfill is a single POST: the whole 2000-09→present range returns ~9,500
