Alaska Taxable, the Office of the State Assessor's annual census of who taxes

what: every municipality's sales, bed, alcohol, car rental, raw fish, tobacco

and marijuana tax rates, the revenue each raised, the effective

property mill rate — and, separately, the assessed full value of every taxing

jurisdiction going back to 1962.

Alaska has no state sales tax and no state property tax, so municipal taxes

are the whole local revenue picture. Raw fish tax in particular is the fiscal

link between a fishing season and a community's budget.

Known issues & gotchas

• The origin site is bot-blocked. www.commerce.alaska.gov — including

the Alaska Taxable Database page named as this brief's landing page — sits

behind DataDome and 403s every plain HTTP client, including from a

residential IP (verified 2026-09-17). maps.commerce.alaska.gov serves the

same division's data without protection. Same trap as

dcced_business_licenses and aea_pce.

• Roughly 12% of reported rates are not numbers, and are deliberately not

loaded as observations: seasonal splits (5% Oct-Mar; 6% Apr-Sept), flat

fees ($14.00 Flat Rate, $25/oz, $10/box), compound rates

(90%/Tobacco Products; 12.31%/Cigarettes, 50 Mills Per/30% Wholesale)

and stale markers (3% (Values from 2016)). Picking one number out of

"5% Oct-Mar; 6% Apr-Sept" would publish a rate the municipality does not

charge for half the year. The verbatim text is preserved in the S3 raw

snapshot for every run; publishing it as a readable table is the obvious

follow-up.

unknown. It is skipped rather than stored as zero, because a zero rate and
