More about Alaska
About this data
Every tax and assessment the State of Alaska levies on catching and processing
fish, by fiscal year ending 30 June, from FY1996 to FY2025:
- Fisheries business tax — on processors, by the value of the raw fish they
take. The big one, and the one that is shared back with municipalities.
- Fishery resource landing tax — on fish processed outside Alaska's
3-mile limit and first landed here. The factory-trawler tax; also shared.
- Salmon enhancement tax, regional seafood development tax,
seafood marketing assessment, common property fishery assessment and
dive fishery management assessment — industry self-assessments, voted on
by the fishermen who pay them, funding hatcheries, marketing and management.
The fisheries business and landing taxes are the fiscal link between a fishing
season and a coastal community's budget: roughly half of each is returned to
the borough or city where the fish were landed. FY2025 sent $16.2M and $4.5M
respectively back to municipalities.
Known issues & gotchas
economy, notfisheries.fisheriesis a legal topic
literal but has no dashboard tab, and a topic without a tab leaves every
page of the dataset without a breadcrumb — the same reason bts_t100,
faa_opsnet and dcced_transport sit under economy. A Fisheries tab is
worth having once the community-level fisheries datasets land (CFEC
earnings, CDQ, the shared-tax-by-community table below), but adding a tab
is a dashboard change and belongs in its own briefs/features/ brief
rather than riding along with a connector.
- These are fiscal years, not calendar years. FY2025 ran 1 July 2024 to
30 June 2025 and is stored at 2025-06-30, the same convention as
apfc_fund_value. A fishing season straddles two fiscal years.
- Parentheses mean two different things, depending on the row, and both
readings are provable from the publisher's own totals:
- On the distribution rows (General Fund, Shared with Municipalities,
DCCED Municipal Allocation) parentheses are a display convention for
"paid out", used up to FY2017 and dropped from FY2018. Read as
magnitudes, the three sum to Total Tax in 30/30 landing-tax years and
