- Population (Census PEP)Population change decomposed: births minus deaths is natural increase, and net migration is everything else. Alaska's totals have held up recently only because natural increase offsets people leaving.
- Population (Census PEP) — AlaskaAK DOL vs Census PEP estimates of the same total. Observed gap 0.07–0.29% (n=5 overlapping years). Divergence past ±0.5% means a vintage mix-up or methodology break worth a brief Log entry.

About this data
The official state population numbers from Alaska's state demographer: statewide, 6 economic regions, and all 30 boroughs/census areas, annually (July 1 reference). Alaska ~738.7k and roughly flat; the internal story — Mat-Su growing, Anchorage shrinking, rural areas mixed — is the interesting part, and this dataset is the dashboard's "sort population by region" backbone.
Known issues & gotchas
- Verified layout (2026-08-06, Vintage 2025): single sheet, 43 rows × 15 cols. Rows 1–3 = title/header padding; row 4 = column labels (
Area Name,April 2020census,July 2021…July 2025estimates, then components-of-change columns); rows 5–41 = data; last 2 rows = vintage + source footnotes. - Hierarchy by indentation: region rows unindented (
Gulf Coast Region), borough rows indented three spaces. Strip and classify by indent. - Name forms differ from the LAUS CSV:
Anchorage, Municipality ofvs LAUS'sMunicipality of Anchorage;Skagway Borough, Municipality ofvsMunicipality of Skagway; regions drop "Economic" (Gulf Coast Region). The connector normalizes to the canonical LAUS-aligned slugs — geography must join across datasets. - Whole file is one vintage: each new vintage restates all estimate years. Load with vintage awareness; the April 2020 census column is fixed.
- The file only covers 2020+ — deep history (1960+) lives in other files on the pop index page; add a backfill file if the dashboard wants the long arc (worth it: statehood-era growth chart).
